HDFC Bank’s disclosure of 1 October 2026 states that RBI approved Anup Bagchi’s appointment as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer for three years from 27 October 2026. The bank’s board, acting on the recommendation of its Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee, approved his appointment as an additional director from 2 October and as MD and CEO from 27 October, subject to shareholder approval. Sashidhar Jagdishan’s tenure is scheduled to end on 26 October.
The disclosure identifies the distinct approvals and effective dates involved in a regulated leadership transition: committee recommendation, regulatory and board approvals, entry onto the board and assumption of executive responsibility. As at the research cutoff, the CEO transition was still forthcoming.
The governance question extends to how the intervening period is used. A board overseeing such a change should agree the handover arrangements, the incoming CEO’s initial priorities and the information needed for early performance reviews. Where the appointment is external, attention to the existing leadership team and the retention of critical executives is particularly relevant.
